Design For Manufacture

I joined the development of the Volpe’s Velox and Coyote cases for TorpedoBags as a freelance design consultant in June of 2018. My responsibilities included final form, CAD, CAM, manufacturing process selection, and geometrical optimization for manufacturing.

materials

One of the largest aspects of my work on the Velox and Coyote projects was the selection of materials for the final cases. This included plastics for injection molding, carbon fiber weaves, filler, and cores for RTM, and fabrics for the interior upholstery.

manufacturing

Velox and Coyote cases are made using tooling and assembly lines that helped to design while working with TorpedoBags. The goal of my work on the manufacturing design was to create molds that allowed for foam molding to be fabricated in a single piece inside of the finished case without the use of industrial adhesives.

Velox Line

Velox is an ultralight carbon fiber reinforced resin case for the on-the-go professional. It’s as lean as a case can be while still retaining all of the durability and resilience of a technical hardcase. The faceted form and stripped down features give Velox the agile look of its namesake.

Coyote Line

Coyote is the utility vehicle of the case world. Holding three horns, accessories, and a ream of music is no problem for this ultra-durable classic. Next generation coyote cases will incorporate RTM carbon fiber finish for even greater resilience to mitigate anything that life can throw at it.
